Peepoo Bags: Sanitation for the Bottom of the Pyramid
Introduction: As of 2008, more than 68% of India’s population (844 million) did not have access to proper sanitation facilities. With the government and other NGO projects failing in their attempts to provide decent sanitation to the poor, a new cheap, sustainable, and hygienic sanitation product called the Peepoo bag invented by Peepoople AB, a private for-profit organization based in Sweden, offered a ray of hope. Most of those living in areas with no sanitation facilities defecated in the open, in and around their neighborhood. As fecal matter and urine contain many pathogens and are a breeding ground for parasites, they put the communities in danger of major health hazards like diarrhea, cholera, water contamination, etc. As of 2008, more than 68% of India’s population (844 million , ) did not have access to proper sanitation facilities.
